John Robert Simpkins

On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, John Robert Simpkins, age 68, of Austintown, OH passed away peacefully at Hospice House in Poland. He was born on February 16, 1956, in Youngstown, OH to Donald Reed and Leona Marie (Miller) Simpkins.

John graduated in 1974 from Poland Seminary High School. Following high school he attended Youngstown State University and graduated with an electrical engineering degree. In the late 70's and early 80's he was also a Mahoning County Reserve Deputy.  John enjoyed listening to jazz music and watching several of his friends who performed in local bands.  He liked to attend "Cigar Night" with his friends at Lake Club, as well. One of his passions in life was putting on a great firework show.  He was a true pyrotechnician and anyone who watched his firework displays always had a great time. John and his late wife, Karen Ann Simpkins were also longtime members of Poland United Methodist Church. He also served as an usher in the church for many years.  

He is survived by his sister, Kathleen Marie (James "Greg" Morrison) of New Springfield, OH; stepsons, Charles Russell of Austintown, OH and Christopher (Paula Joy) Russell Sr. of Niles, OH; nephews, Tanner Joyce of Poland, OH, Corey Bukovich of Boardman, OH, Thomas Joyce and his girlfriend, Taylor of New Springfield, OH; grandchildren, Scarlett Russell, Jeremiah Bryson Nichols, Virginia Russell, Christopher Russell, Jr. , Dalton Russell, Barton Russell, Joy Marie Russell; two great-grandchildren, and last but not least, his pet python, Mojo. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Karen Ann Simpkins and his grandson, Zachary Russell. 

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Poland United Methodist located at 1940 Boardman Poland Rd, Poland, OH 44514. Family and friends may call between 10:00AM-11:45AM with a service beginning at noon.
