Harry "Boots" Gates Obituary

Harry 'Boots' Gates, 87, of Girard (Liberty Township) Ohio passed away (Thursday December 13, 2018) at OMNI Manor Nursing Home from complications due to CHF and COPD. 

'Boots' was born Dec. 9, 1931, in Strattanville, PA. to Robert E. Gates and Floda Pearl (Kinch) Gates.

 A United States Army Veteran of the Korean War (1949-1952), CPL Harry 'Boots' Gates served with the 52nd Ordnance Ammo Company and was stationed in Hwachon. He was a member of the Strattanville American Legion Post 249 for 65 years. He was very proud to have his 'Strattanville Troop Banner' displayed inside and in town. (His Troop Banner was proudly displayed in his room at OMNI Manor Nursing Home)  

'Boots' was a welder by trade and worked for the G.A.T.X. Sharon Plant until it closed in the early 80's then worked for J & D Enterprises until 2017. 

He was an avid racing fan. His favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt. He loved to attend racing events with several of his buddies (John and Doc were two of his friends that enjoyed going with him) He would travel to Florida to see the Dirt Car Nationals and stay with his Daughter and Son In Law Cathy (Bob) Singleton and Grandchildren.   

Survivors include his wife Janice (Hollenbaugh) Gates of 61 years (OMNI Manor) two daughters, Cathy S. (Gates) SIngleton of Port Charlotte, Florida and Mary Lou Gates (OMNI West ALF in Youngstown, Ohio), two grandchildren Donald C. Landes III and Cindy R. Landes both of Port Charlotte, FL. Also surviving is his twin sister Harriet Songer. In addition, he leaves his Brother In Law Jim (Janet) Hollenbaugh, and Sisters In-Law Peggy (Edward) Held and Sandra (Frank) Jarecki and several nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.  

Harry was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Duane ('Pete'), Donald, Paul, Carl and Harold ('Ding') and sisters Louise Lewis, Marie Nelson and Edith Kitchen. 

'Boots' final resting place will be Green Haven Memorial Gardens 3495 South Canfield Niles Rd. Canfield Ohio 44406. Date and time for his Memorial Service to be announced. 

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice House, or The American Heart Association or The American Diabetes Association.
