Michael Clark Luthern, known to many as "Ziggy," died peacefully on Sunday, February 24, 2019 in the company of family. If you know Mike, then you will not be surprised to learn that he stubbornly fought his terminal cancer diagnosis for the last year.
Mike, age 59, was raised in Hubbard, Ohio. His parents are Patricia Reno and John "Sonny" Luthern. He attended St. Patrick's Elementary School and Hubbard Schools thereafter. For the last decade, he resided in New Matamoras, Ohio, where he lived close to nature.
Mike was a gentle and loving father to Melanie Luthern Allen of Santa Monica, CA, David Williams of Girard, Ohio and the late Veronica Luthern. He taught all of his children a love for the land, preached to them about the value of a good education, and taught them how to cook venison “butterflies,” more commonly referred to as back tenderloin. Michael was an avid outdoorsman who only killed what he could eat and despised poachers.
The last years of his life were happy ones. He gave his daughter away to be married in his church, the great outdoors. He hugged his first grandchild, Ezra Michael Allen. He spent time with his mother, his brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Rebecca Luthern of Poland, Ohio, his sister, Lynn Luthern Joyce of NY and his cousins, Patrick Marchese of NV, Mary Gay Marchese Pettit of CA, Andrew Marchese of Idaho and Joseph "Rick" Smith of Hubbard, OH.
Michael was a devoted cat-dad to Sassafras, the world’s meanest cat. He is remembered as a polite and kind man. He has now joined his brother, Joe Luthern, his daughter, Veronica, and many beloved friends in eternal merrymaking.
To his last days, Michael insisted that he did not know how he came to don the nickname "Ziggy." Perhaps because his luck mirrored that of the namesake comic character, he would quip. If you know how Mike became "Ziggy," or would simply like to celebrate his life, please join his family on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from NOON - 3:00 PM at The Gentry, 116 E. Liberty St., Hubbard, OH 44425. Please come prepared to share your best memory of him.
