Byron A. Bigelow Sr., age 89, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2024, at Hospice House. With family at his side and with his final breaths, he transitioned from their hands to HIS. Born on August 14, 1935, in Boardman, Ohio to Harry Leo Bigelow and Camila Casper Malits, Byron lived a full life.
Byron graduated from South High School where he was very active in sports from football to track and field. He was best known, at the age of 17, for completing a cross-country bicycle trip from New York to California. When asked why he did this, he said “For the Challenge”. He later joined the US Army/ARNG, where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, before leaving the service. Byron was always known as a hardworking family provider, often working two jobs at a time to make ends meet. He later continued his career as a postal carrier, manager at Winkies, and later as a tractor-trailer driver for several trucking companies in the local area.
Byron loved riding his Harley motorcycle and in his later years will be fondly remembered for riding his little blue scooter throughout Streetsboro, Ohio which he later called home. He loved sharing stories with folks at the Water Department, the Sheriff's Dept., and the local Walmart.
Byron is survived by his sister Dora (Ron) Baker, his former wife Sakiko Bigelow, and their children, Debbie (Sam) Franco, Clara Swaggerty, Byron (Rhonda) Bigelow, Ronald Bigelow, Donna (Rick) Trumbetta, Diana (David) McGeary and various grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy; brothers, Claire, Paul, Harry Bigelow, William Bigelow, and Charles Perry; sisters, Dorothy Gill, Rose Griest, Camilla Pfeiffer; and his grandchildren, Tiffany Trumbetta and Marshall Swaggerty.
The immediate family will host a private memorial service with no calling hours per his request. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Byron's memory, to the Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnels to Towers.
Byron Bigelow Sr. will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His final resting place shall be at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown, Ohio.
