On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Darla Kay Phelan, age 61, of Youngstown passed away in St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital just twenty-day after her diagnoses with Stage 4, Small Cell Lung cancer. She was born in Girard, OH on January 3, 1963, to Thelma (Blair) Elliott.
Darla is survived by her children, Stacey (Josh) Abretski of Salem, Christopher (fiancé, Annie Bonetti) Bretz, Shawn Cruz both of Youngstown, Jerimy Santiago of the Carolinas, Daniel Santiago of Youngstown; sister, Ida Adovsio; sixteen grandchildren, and four brothers.
Besides her mother, Darla was also preceded in death by her grandmother, Ida Nitzsky, who she absolutely adored, her former companion, William Santiago and in the last four years her two beloved sons, Patrick Phelan, and William Santiago Jr.
Darla attended Matthew's High-school in Vienna and was talented in many ways. While she was employed here and there; but her focus was as a homemaker, raising her children and caring for her home. She loved her family, cooking on holidays and spending time with her children and grandchildren. On weekends, Darla also enjoyed going to garage sales with her sister, Ida. She cared deeply for others, always doctoring those who needed it whether a child, adult, or animal.
She loved decorating her house on holidays, especially Christmas with her lighted houses. Darla collected little trinkets and cool things, old stamps, paper mâché, and absolutely loved her numb chucks.
She climbed many high mountains during this life but her strong will never wavered.
