Darwin Lee Thomas

Darwin Lee Thomas, 60, of Akron, OH, formerly of New Castle, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at the Grace Woods Personal Care Center. He was born on September 14, 1965, to Susen G. Payne, of New Wilmington, PA, and the late John L. Christian. 

Darwin graduated from New Castle, Sr. High School in 1983, and the following year, he enlisted and honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps. As a devout sports fanatic, Darwin loved the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and anything involving the New Castle Red Hurricanes. He also enjoyed going on fishing trips.

As a grandfather who absolutely loved spending time with family, Darwin never missed attending any of his grandchildren’s sporting events, no matter how far away the events were being held.

His love for young people was displayed as he served many years as a mentor and coach to countless young athletes who grew up on the West Side of New Castle, particularly in the Bell Avenue neighborhood. 

In addition to his mother, he leaves to cherish his memory his children, Kyle Vignovich, Darwin M. Thomas, Ryan “Pete” Thomas and Chrystian “Criddy” Thomas all of New Castle, PA; his sisters Juatana “Tiny” Payne of Pittsburgh, PA, Jeaunna “Jee Jee” Payne of New Wilmington, PA and Robin Christian of New Castle, PA; his brother, John (Karen) Payne of Canfield, OH; seven grandchildren; Ky’la Vignovich, Cayde Thomas, Camilla Vignovich, Kyrie Vignovich, Cayne Thomas, Camaya Thomas and Chrystian Thomas Jr, all of New Castle, PA; and a host of other family and friends. 

In addition to his father, Darwin was preceded in death by John T. Payne Sr. whom he lovingly referred to as “Dad”, as well as his paternal and maternal grandparents.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 6 pm on Bell Avenue in New Castle, PA.
