Unexpectedly on August 21, 2025, David Gerald Yohman, age 65, of Youngstown, OH passed away at home. He was born in Youngstown on September 5, 1959, to Gerald Andrew Yohman and Christine (Cataline) Yohman Botirius.
David is survived by his beloved son, David "DJ" (Mandi) Yohman of Austintown; his best buddy, his dog, Butters; siblings Janet (Judy) Yohman of Cortland, Chrissy (Rick) Falter of FL; nieces, Jennifer (Mike) Hoffman, Kristen (Charlie) Swanson all of FL; great niece and nephew, Addy Lawson and Kason Hoffman; step-mother, Viola "Jean" Zupko, and his best friend, John "Huntz" Kren of Austintown.
Besides his parents, David was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Daum) Yohman.
"David will be missed by all who have had the chance to know and love him. Around the neighborhood, he was affectionately known as “Grandpa Butters,” a nickname he wore proudly during his many daily strolls with his beloved cockapoo. They never made it too far without a wave, a smile, a quick chat, or a chance for Butters to get a pet from whoever was outside.
He loved playing card games with friends and family, especially with his sisters, son, and brother-in-law, where laughter and light-hearted competition were also always on the table. Summers often found him up at the cabin in Huron, casting a line into the water, though truth be told, Dave would fish anywhere he could drop a hook.
His home-cooked meals will be missed by all fortunate enough to taste them. Dave’s spaghetti sauce, beef roast, pepperoni rolls, and potato salad were the staples of so many gatherings. And his custard pie and kolachi? Unforgettable. If you had the pleasure of enjoying his food, you know exactly what we mean — and if you didn’t, well, we’re sorry for your loss, too.
Dave cherished the simple pleasures: a quiet day, meticulously taking care of his yard, cleaning his car to keep it spic and span, a good NASCAR race on TV, and Sundays spent cheering (and sometimes yelling) at the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, and — for his son’s sake — even the Green Bay Packers. He was known for his daily phone calls, especially with DJ, where time could pass discussing everything or absolutely nothing. Those are the calls that will be missed most of all.
He found comfort in reclining back, cuddling up with Butters, and spoiling him rotten. There was not an animal Dave did not love — the well-fed raccoons, squirrels, and woodchucks in his yard were all part of his extended family, and they will miss him too.
Dave would give you the white button-up shirt off his back and the Birkenstocks off his feet, he would remember the trivial details about you, bring you your favorite meal, or help you clear snow off your driveway in the winter. He was funny, stubborn, endlessly generous, and deeply caring. A true minimalist at heart, he often said he did not need much — just his son and his dog — and he meant it.
More than anything, Dave was a good man. Honest, humble, a hard worker, and full of love in his own quiet way. He leaves behind a trail of laughter, love, and full hearts. His absence is already felt deeply, but his memory will live on in stories told, meals shared, and walks taken in his name.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Friends of Fido in honor of Dave’s lifelong love of animals.
