On January 28, 2025, the world lost a radiant soul, Edith “Edie” (Banfield) Checkel of Youngstown, Ohio, gently slipped away at the age of seventy-nine surrounded by her family. She was born on October 12,1945, to her loving parents, Earl, and Edith Banfield. Edie was a beacon of joy from the very beginning.
In 1972, she married John “Jack” Checkel, the love of her life. During their marriage of almost fifty-three years, they had a son, Jason Checkel, whom they cherished deeply.
Edie was a proud 1963 graduate of South High School and gave twenty dedicated years to Robbin’s Furniture store in Youngstown. Most recently she brought warmth and laughter to the Pastime Bar on South Avenue as a bartender, retiring in 2021. She was proudly known as “Edie from the Pastime.”
Edie’s passion for baking was legendary, especially during the magical Christmas season, when her kitchen became a haven of love and sweet aromas for her family and friends. The thrill of the casino, scratch off tickets, and keno were also beloved pastimes of hers. She had a huge and kind heart and would do anything she could to help others. Edie was a long-time member of John Knox Presbyterian Church where she was deeply involved until they dissolved and most recently, she attended Canfield Presbyterian Church.
Besides her parents, Edie was also preceded in death by her siblings, Earl Banfield,, Jo-Ann (Banfield) Ammon, and brother-in-law, Joseph Ammon.
Edie is survived by her beloved husband, Jack Checkel; son, Jason Checkel of Youngstown, sisters-in-law, Melanie Banfield of Poland, Patricia (David Fort) Checkel of Cleveland; cousins, Carroll Bell of Shelby Township, MI, and Ginny Remick of Lafayette, IN, Kelly (Tina) Banfield of Pace, FL, Karen Mackie of Orlando, FL, Larry (Sheree) Banfield of Poland, and Kenny (Shelly) Banfield of Austintown; nieces and nephews, Sheila (Dave) Schertzer of Austintown, Brian (Mara) Banfield of Poland, Stacie (Derek) Pielech Wilmington NC, Brian (Alex) Fort of Cleveland, Kevin (Emily) Fort of Austin, TX, and Noelle Baker of Boardman; as well as ten great-nieces and nephews and one great-great niece.
Edie’s warm smile and kind heart will forever be etched into the memories of all who have had the privilege to know her. She fought a courageous battle with cancer, her spirit unbroken until the very end. She is now at peace surrounded by her loved ones who went before her and is with the lord she worshiped her entire life.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of her Memorial Service at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St. Canfield, Ohio 44406.
