On Saturday, October 11, 2025, John James Kovach Jr., age 77, a decorated Air Force veteran and dedicated family man, passed away at Mercy Health- Youngstown, OH.
He was born July 6, 1948, in Ravenna, OH, to John and M. Ruth (Carver) Kovach.
John graduated from Newton Falls High School in 1966. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Air Force. His distinguished military service earned him six Air Force medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and permanent crew wings. John was a gunner with the Spectre AC-130 gunship squadron. The unofficial name for the gunship was "Puff the Magic Dragon" or "Puff". A beautiful sight at night.
John was also an Eagle Scout with Troop 60, a testament to his early commitment to leadership and service. Following his military career, he worked as a tool and die maker at Delphi Packard Electric for 33 years before retiring.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was an avid collector who enjoyed the thrill of the hunt. His passion for collecting brought him joy and fulfillment throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara, whom he married on June 21, 1986; his son Michael (Ariel) of Cortland, OH; daughter Amanda of New Castle PA; granddaughters Varonyka, Athena, and Tessa; niece Angela Tackett; Victoria Ellis; nephew Tyler Dunmire; sister-in-law Jeanine (Ron), and close friend Leone.
John was preceded in death by his parents.
His legacy of service, dedication, and love will be remembered by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those he leaves behind.
