Joseph D. Posey Jr.

Joseph D. Posey Jr., affectionately known as Bud, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Caprice Health Care Center in North Lima, Ohio. He was 100 years old.

Born on February 17, 1925, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bud was the son of Joseph D. Posey Sr. and Irene (Werndle) Posey. In his teenage years, he moved with his family to the Youngstown area, where he would spend the majority of his life building a legacy rooted in service, hard work, and devotion to family.

In 1943, at the age of 18, Bud enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. He served honorably until 1946 aboard the USS LCI 704 in the South Pacific and took part in several significant battles including Okinawa and Midway. His military service remained a point of pride throughout his life.

On May 27, 1949, Bud married Patricia LaVelle. Together, they made their home in Struthers, Ohio, where they raised their family and shared a loving marriage until Patricia’s passing in 2010. Their bond was marked by shared joys—dancing (especially square dancing), bowling nights, fishing trips, and card games around the kitchen table.

Bud worked at Ungar Brothers from 1946 to 1968 and then continued his employment at Syro Steel Galvanizing until his retirement in 1990. Known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his craft, he took pride in providing for his family and contributing to his community.

Bud was a member of St. Albans Masonic Lodge #677 for 75 years. He was also a former member of First Covenant Church in Boardman.

Bud’s greatest joy came from time spent with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sons Joseph (Sue) Posey of Poland, Ohio; Thomas Posey of Girard; and daughter Jan (Mark) Modarelli of Boardman. His legacy continues through six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers: Payne Posey of Poland, Ohio; and Fred Posey of Bonita Springs, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Patricia; and sisters Kathleen Finn, Virginia Sinchock, and Irene Holt.

Per Bud’s wishes, there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Bud’s memory to either the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
