Mary Hildebrand Obituary

Mary Lou (O’Hara) Hildebrand, age 91, of Youngstown, OH, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 6, 2020 as a result of advanced Alzheimer’s.  She was born Mary Lou Adovasio on January 27, 1929 at St. Ann’s Hospital in Columbus, OH then she was officially adopted by James and Wilhelmina ‘Minnie’ (Heinrichs) O’Hara at age six. Her parents and brother Donald preceded her in death.  She was raised in the Wickcliffe Circle area of Austintown, on S. Main St.

Mary Lou was a 1947 graduate of Fitch High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and played marimba for Youngstown Symphony Children’s Orchestra.  She worked at Brinks Armored Transportation before her marriage, sometimes handing out payroll to workers at the steel mills directly from a table set up at the back of the bullet-proof truck.  Because of that position, she was required to learn how to handle a gun.  Brinks personnel trained her with firearms after the Great Brinks Robbery of 1950.  It was at the gun range where she met her husband, Robert J. Hildebrand, a sharpshooter marksman and gunsmith.  They married on May 12, 1953 upon his return from the Korean War.  In 1989 shortly after her husband's death, Mary Lou retired from Packard Electric after nearly 25 years.

Mary Lou lived on DeHoff Drive in Austintown from 1957-2015, until moving in with her youngest, Skye Grapentine, who was her caregiver to the end.

She leaves behind her five daughters, Jill (Gary) Burstein, of El Paso, Texas, Lori (Scott) Mallory of Pickerington, Ohio, Lisa (Tim) Kennedy of Austintown, Ohio, Lani (Tim) Wollam of Westerville, Ohio, and Skye Grapentine of Youngstown, Ohio, eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

There will be no services although her family greatly appreciates the wonderful friends, neighbors and family members who think of her often or came to celebrate with us on her 90th birthday last year.

“Now don’t aggravate me, or I’ll sit on you and there’ll be nothing left but a grease spot!”
