On Thursday, December 18, 2025, Norris Eugene “Gene” Lunger, age 93, of Austintown, OH, passed away at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. He was born July 8, 1932, in Juneau, PA, to Thomas Eugene Lunger and Catherine Grace (Kanouff) McMillen.
After graduating from Punxsutawney High School in PA, Gene honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a Sergeant during the Korean War. He specialized as an aircraft mechanic.
After his discharge, Gene worked as a hot-metal crane operator for Youngstown Sheet & Tube for over 30 years. He had a special interest in electrical devices and could fix just about anything. Anyone who ever met him heard one or two of his “stories” about growing up with his grandparents in PA.
Gene was a very proud, simple, and honest man who took the role of “the man of the family” very seriously and watched out for everyone until the very end.
He is survived by his daughters, Amanda (Robert) Walker, Penny Lunger; grandchildren, Ryan (Jay) Walker, Sarah Walker; half-sisters, Arlene Pomeroy, Ruth Hiner, Sarah Jane Hinchman, Jackie Rickard, Betty Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Gene was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Carol Jean (Larson) Lunger, and six half-siblings.
Viewing and family to receive friends from 11:00 am until the time of prayers at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at Cremation & Funeral Service by Gary S Silvat Inc, 3896 Oakwood Ave, Austintown, OH 44515, followed immediately by burial at Green Haven Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Gene will be laid to rest next to his wife.
