Roger Makara, age 70, of Poland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on June 28th, 2024.
Born on February 10, 1954, in Youngstown, Ohio, he was the son of Nancy L (Keir) Barber and Edward Makara.
Roger graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1972. He began his career as a small business owner, running Makara’s Alignment, while also working at Youngstown Tool & Die. Later, he became a machinist and a dedicated employee of Parker Hannifin and the United Steelworkers Union, Local 2332, retiring in 2014.
Roger enjoyed birdwatching with his wife, playing golf, listening to music, riding his motorcycle, and spending quality time with his family. One of his fondest memories was exploring Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, Ohio, alongside his grandfather, Willard Keir, in search of the elusive pileated woodpecker.
Roger was a remarkable father, husband, grandfather, and friend. His sense of humor could put a smile on anyone’s face.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Makara; daughters, Abby Makara and Megan (Sarah Fannon) Makara; grandchildren, Alexus Lochrane and Jaxson Thomas; and niece, Christine Pizzo.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Williard and Elizabeth Keir, his mother Nancy, father Edward, and his sister, Betsy Makara.
As per his request, there will be no calling hours. Instead, the family will hold a gathering to celebrate Roger’s life with close friends and relatives.
Roger's family extends heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staff at Omni Manor and Southern Care Hospice for their exceptional and compassionate care during the last two months of Roger’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105—the charity that Roger endorsed and generously supported throughout his life.
