Ruben Darío Luque, age 89, of Campbell, Ohio, passed away on July 26, 2026. Born in Candelaria, Colombia, Ruben was the son of Vicenta Guerrero and Gregorio J. Luque. He migrated to the United States in the 1960s and settled in New York City, where he lived in the Bronx, Manhattan, and later in Queens, New York.
Throughout his life, Ruben’s work spanned from working at the University Club of New York to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. He co-owned a business in Miami, Florida, and spent many years as a New York City taxi driver. Those who knew him during his years behind the wheel may even remember his taxi medallion number: 9M19.
Ruben is survived by Heidi Valentin, Candida Rosario, Vincent Luque, and Ruby Luque-Alvarez, whom he shared with the late Maria Barretto Rodriguez, and Ruben Darío Luque Jr., whom he shared with Beatriz Gloria Arteta. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Darlene, Brendon, Toby, Dominic, Nino, Lucia, Sophia, Bienvenido, Louis, Miguel, Jeanette, Samuel, Denise, Cathy, Will, Jackie, and Angel, as well as his siblings, nieces, and nephews.
Ruben loved spending time with family and friends, listening to Colombian music, especially Vallenatos. With his festive demeanor, he always brought energy and laughter wherever he went. He could always be counted on to dance, enliven a party, and connect especially well with younger generations. In his later years, he treasured his extended visits to Barranquilla, Colombia, where he spent meaningful time with his siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Ruben’s legacy is that wherever he went, he left an impact with his energetic and positive outlook on life.
Despite his declining health and battle with pulmonary fibrosis, Ruben was able to celebrate his 89th birthday in Ohio surrounded by family and friends. He will be remembered for his lively spirit, his love of music and dancing, and the joy he brought to those around him.
