Thelma Lucille Gearheart, born April 28, 1949, in the quiet hills of Cumberland, Maryland, entered the world as a gentle light— the beloved daughter of Earl Lucian and Hazel Ruth (Paugh) Strawser, whose love shaped the roots from which she grew.
On the evening of March 18th, Thelma slipped peacefully from this world, her hand held tenderly by her loving daughter and her sister‑in‑law, Lou Ann Gearheart, who kept watch beside her as she drifted into rest. She left surrounded by love—the same love she spent her life giving.
She was one of four sisters, a lifelong companion in laughter and in life to Janice (Jim) Powell, Edna Mae Dickson Tofano, and Emma Jean (Bob) Yates. Together they formed a tapestry of memories—threads of mischief, devotion, and unbreakable sisterhood.
For 49½ years, she was the cherished wife of William Gearheart, and together they built a home filled with love. She was a devoted mother to Wendy (Jim) Smith, Bill (Pam) Gearheart, and Tim (Melanie) Gearheart. A proud Nana to Sarah (Mike) Aughenbaugh, Mike, Ryan, Brandon, Alyssa, and Jeffrey Smith, Dakota and Bryson Gearheart, Dakota (Shae) Gearheart and Savannah (Joe) Braat. A Great Nana to Sophia, Aubrey and Nicholas Aughenbaugh, Scarlett Smith, Spencer and Paisley Brink, Sawyer Reed, Bentley, Harley and Riley Gearheart, Mila, Motley and Mayvis Braat. As well as an Aunt, Great Aunt and Great Great Aunt.
Thelma was an artist of everyday beauty. In floral design, she coaxed blossoms into harmony; in cake decorating, she turned celebrations into edible poetry; in sewing, she stitched comfort into every seam; and in writing poetry, she captured the world as she felt it— soft, meaningful, and full of grace.
Her life was a garden of small wonders, each hobby a reflection of her spirit: creative, patient, tender, and deeply attuned to the joy of making something beautiful.
Though she has stepped beyond the horizon, her light remains— in the flowers she arranged, the poems she penned, the traditions she nurtured, and the family she adored.
Thelma Lucille Gearheart leaves behind a legacy of love, woven into the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Her story continues in every life she touched, a quiet, enduring melody that will never fade.
